Find evidence before making changes
A crash, delay or freeze is a symptom. I prefer to reproduce the behavior, inspect traces and reduce uncertainty before touching the architecture.
ABOUT / EXPERIENCE
I'm Antonin Do Souto, an independent software engineer based in Porto, Portugal. I have been building software professionally since 2020, from application and backend work to Linux tooling and native systems.
My interests increasingly converge on debugging, observability and reliability: understanding the cause behind a failure, designing clear degraded behavior and leaving a system easier to reason about than I found it.
I also teach software engineering. Explaining a subject to other developers has made me more deliberate about reproducible examples, practical tradeoffs and readable technical decisions.
Experience
Since 2020
Started delivering software for clients, working across mobile applications, backend services, integrations and developer tooling. The projects changed; the habit of understanding existing systems stayed.
Since 2022
Began teaching practical software development to students and professional learners, including international iOS development classes at EPITA and training through M2i Formation.
2025 onward
Based in Porto, focusing more deeply on Linux behavior, debugging, low-level software and reliability while continuing independent engineering work.
2026
Authored complementary Rust pull requests for the Pop!_OS COSMIC Launcher, working across Wayland capture, asynchronous protocol updates and the Alt-Tab frontend.
Working principles
A crash, delay or freeze is a symptom. I prefer to reproduce the behavior, inspect traces and reduce uncertainty before touching the architecture.
A focused patch, a clear investigation report or a minimal reproducer is often more valuable than a large rewrite.
Code reviews, documentation and teaching are part of the engineering process, not something added at the end.
